Love My Hair organic Indigo

Love My Hair indigo is certified organic and Halal and is endorsed by Beauty Without Cruelty and Vegan SA. It is a pure plant powder and does not contain any chemicals or additives at all.

Indigo powder comes from the dried leaves of the Indigofera tinctoria shrub. This plant has been used for centuries to dye fabric blue and to dye hair. Indigotin, the substance responsible for the blue colour is reputed to have antiseptic and antioxidant properties.

Used in combination with henna, indigo dyes hair in various shades of brown to black. You can either do a 2-step dyeing process using first Love My Hair pure henna and then pure indigo, or you can mix the henna and indigo together.

Mixing this pure indigo with either the Love My Hair 100% Herbal soft black or dark brown dye assists greatly with grey coverage.

This indigo can be mixed with the Love My Hair pure henna for body art purposes.

As this is a natural product, the colour may vary from batch to batch. It is for external use only.

100 grams is enough for collar to shoulder length hair.

Instructions 2-step henna/indigo dye process:
- Dye your hair with Love My Hair pure henna as described on the henna page, but wash out the henna using a silicone, polymer free shampoo/conditioner. Silicones/polymers create build-up on the hair which will prevent the indigo from dyeing properly. Grey and light coloured hair will go an orange colour.
- Mix the indigo with enough warm water to make a smooth, thick paste. Use a non-metallic spoon and bowl to mix the powder. Once it is mixed with water it must be used immediately as it starts oxidizing.
- Apply the indigo paste over your henna’ed hair in a thick layer.
- Cover with clingwrap and a towel/hat/scarf. It is important to keep your head as warm as possible as indigo dye releases better with heat.
- Leave it on your hair for 1-4 hours. You should do a strand test before dyeing all your hair to determine the correct application time.
- Wash your hair with a sulphate-free, gentle shampoo or use a conditioner. Sulphates (e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate) will strip the dye out. You can also just rinse your hair thoroughly and use a shampoo the next day. This will help the indigo to develop its colour on your hair.

Instructions for mixing with the Love My Hair 100% Herbal dyes:
- Mix the 100% Herbal hair dye and the indigo in a 50:50 mix and apply to your hair following the instructions for the 100% Herbal hair dye.
- Wash out with a sulphate-free shampoo/conditioner.
- Adding more indigo to the mix will result in a darker colour.

Instructions for mixing henna and indigo together:
- Mix the henna and indigo together using a non-metallic bowl and spoon into a smooth, thick paste.
- Adjust the ratio depending on how dark you want your hair. Add more indigo for darker colours and more henna for more reddish-brown colours.
- Apply the henna/indigo mixture to freshly washed hair. For best results use a clarifying shampoo before the dye application. This is a shampoo that contains sulphates and other cleansing agents but does not contain silicones/polymers. This will remove any product build-up from the hair and allow the herbal dyes to work properly.
- Cover with clingwrap and a towel/hat/scarf and keep your head as warm as possible during the dye application.
- Leave the dye mixture on your hair for 1-4 hours. You should do a strand test before dyeing all your hair to determine your application time.
- Rinse the mixture out of your hair thoroughly until the water runs clear. Shampoo using a gentle sulphate-free shampoo or use a conditioner to wash out the dye mixture. You can also just rinse it out well and use a gentle sulphate-free shampoo the next day.
