Coco Peat
Coco peat is a real pleasure to work with! It's light, fluffy and not dirty becuase it's been washed and buffered before being compressed into a block of coco peat.
"Washed" - Excess dust has been washed off before compressing
"Buffered" - Soaked in a calcium magnesium solution in order to lower potassium and sulphur levels
Coco peat is inert so fertilizer must be used.
Coco peat, a.k.a. coco coir / coco pith / coco soil, is a 100% natural fibre made of coconut husks, it's a natural growing medium. It has excellent water retention properties and when fully saturated it still holds around 22% oxygen - Roots need both water and oxygen to thrive.
Coco peat is a completely eco-friendly option for use as growing medium. It makes use of the fibrous material of the coconut (coco coir) which is a natural by-product of the coconut farming industry. Coco peat is often mixed with perlite, vermiculite and other substrates and amendments to create the desired growing medium and is most effective as a growing medium when nutrients are added to the coco and when the pH of the medium is controlled. Coco peat is also used as animal bedding and in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes and mattresses.
Coco is great for aerating your soil and increasing the amount of oxygen available to roots. Just add water (about 8 litres), the compressed coco block expands to roughly 70 litres of usable growing medium.
Perlite
Perlite has many uses and is often used in horticulture. It is a hard highly porous material made by super-heating volcanic glass. It is mixed into the soil to help improve aeration and drainage. Perlite is rough so water and nutrients gather in its crevices, making moisture and nutrients more available to the plant. Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous rock and as such, is not toxic.
Perlite offers excellent thermal insulation. It is used in reptile incubation as an incubation medium for reptile eggs and also for raising the humidity in incubators.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite is a mineral which undergoes significant expansion when heated. Well known for using as growing medium as it improves aeration of the soil, absorbs added nutrients and improves moisture retention of the soil. Many craft soils include around 5 - 10% vermiculite in their soil mix.
Vermiculite can be used If you enjoy germinating seeds at home or run a flower business or horticultural business, then vermiculite is ideal for the germination of seeds. Not only is it sterile but its aeration properties combined with its water-holding capacity makes it a very suitable medium for direct contact with the seeds. Vermiculite decomposes with time to release the plant nutrients potassium and magnesium. Vermiculite is also used in reptile incubation. It's a great incubation medium for reptile eggs and also for raising the humidity in incubators. It is advisable to wear a dust mask and goggles when working with vermiculite to avoid throat or eye irritation.
