Coco Peat holds enough oxygen, even when totally saturated, to support the roots of the plant. Coco peat, a.k.a. coco coir/coco pith/coco soil, is a 100% natural fibre made of coconut husks, it's a natural growing medium. Coco has excellent water retention and when fully saturated it still holds around 22% oxygen - Roots need both water and oxygen to thrive.
Perlite and vermiculite are inorganic, mineral-based materials used in horticulture. Perlite is siliceous rock, a naturally occurring type of volcanic glass. Vermiculite is comprised of naturally occurring minerals. Added to soil and soil mixes, perlite and vermiculite provide structure and improved drainage.
You can mix cocopeat, perlite and vermiculite in your seed-starting mix or potting mix, since each ingredient has different functions and benefits. Cocopeat holds water and oxygen, perlite acts as an aerator, helping the soil shed water while vermiculite acts as a sponge to help the soil hold moisture. All of them work in tandem to give your soil the right balance of drainage, structure and water retention.
This soilless mix does not contain the nutrients necessary for plant growth so nutrients must be added for successful growth and harvest.
