Mattress & Bedding Buying Tips

Crucial to maintaining proper back health and aiding in providing a good night's sleep, your choice of mattress and bed base is undoubtedly an important one. But with a plethora of options, customisations, and buzzwords, it can be hard to settle on the right mattress.

Let’s break down some of the more common options to assist you in selecting the right new mattress and bed frame for your room.

Size

Many factors can affect the mattress size you want or need. The size of your bedroom can constrain you to a smaller bed size, your height may require you to find one with a longer length, you may need a larger model because you share the bed, or you may have other bedroom furniture to work around. Below is a handy chart displaying the dimensions of the different size options:

Size

Dimensions

King Single Mattress

Firmness

Mattress firmness is the measure of how soft a mattress is when you first lie on it. A comfortable mattress firmness is important because it factors into the quality of your rest. What’s more, the firmness of different mattresses can be ideal for different types of sleepers, making it easier to enjoy high-quality sleep.

Stomach Sleepers

If you prefer to sleep on your stomach, a Firm mattress may be your best option, as the additional support helps keep your spine aligned.

Back Sleepers

Are you someone who is most comfortable sleeping on their back? If so, a Medium mattress may be optimal as it provides needed support for your spine, while maximising comfort.

Side Sleepers

Soft or Plush mattresses are an excellent choice for side sleepers as they contour to the curves of your body and provide support while you sleep.

Some mattresses pair the inherent firmness with additional materials and technologies to provide superior comfort. The Domino range from A.H. Beard utilises some additional inclusions for their mattresses:

  • Comfort Foams: Provides body-conforming comfort and pressure relief to minimise tossing and turning.
  • Gel-Infused Memory Foam: Conforms to the contours of the body to help relieve pressure.
  • Conforma Support System: Features zoned areas of firmer coils to supply the mattress with additional support and pressure relief.
Different Types of Mattresses

Much like firmness and size, the internal material of the mattress plays an important factor in ensuring you enjoy high-quality sleep.

One of the most common mattress types are coil mattresses, which make up the majority of the support base. Coil mattresses are available in a few different variations to suit multiple preferences and price points:

  • Open Spring: The most common type of mattress. Features interconnected springs, thus movement on one side can translate to the other.
  • Continuous Coil: These mattresses utilise a single piece of wire looped into springs, forming the entire structure of the bed.
  • Offset Coils: Moulded into an hourglass shape and held together with wire, conforming to your body shape as you lay down.

But there are plenty of other mattress types to help you sleep comfortably, such as the pocketed coil, which is designed a little differently to the other coil mattresses.

  • Pocketed Coil: Pocketed coils, also known as pocket springs, are engineered in barrel shapes and reside in their own ‘pockets’. Designed to work independently of each other, pocketed coils provide additional support with the added benefit of motion isolation. This means movement on one side won’t necessarily transfer to the other side - ideal if you share a bed.

What about mattresses that aren’t coil-based?

  • Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses are topped with a layer of viscoelastic material designed to absorb your weight, relieving pressure on the joints, increasing circulation, and moulding to the shape of your body.
  • Gel: Often infused into foam mattresses, gel helps keep the mattresses cool to the touch, without a lot of the heat generation which can occur with memory foam. The A.H. Beard Domino Amsterdam and Oslo both utilise a Gel-Infused Memory Foam.
How to Clean a Mattress

It’s easy enough to wash your sheets and pillowcases every week but mattresses are a bit harder to clean. Regularly cleaning your mattress can extend the lifespan and keep you sleeping comfortably for years to come.

A mattress protector can be the first line of defence for your mattress, helping to protect the surface from general wear-and-tear, as well as stains. But if you aren’t using a mattress protector or just want to give your mattress a deeper clean here are some cleaning quick tips:

  • Regularly vacuum your mattress, paying particular attention to the seams and crevices as that is where dirt and dust can build up. Use a crevice tool/attachment to deliver a thorough clean.
  • For stains, use a sponge and warm soapy water to spot-clean the surface of the mattress.
